Wadden Sea National Park
The Wadden Sea is the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mudflats in the world, stretching along the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, and functioning as the critical refuelling stop for millions of migratory birds. It is strongest for birders and for anyone who wants to understand a tidal ecosystem at continental scale.
Where to find the wildlife
The Wadden Sea's wildlife runs on tides rather than clocks. At high water birds are pushed off the flats onto roosts where they concentrate in dense flocks; at low water they scatter across kilometres of mud to feed. Timing your visit to the tide table is not a refinement here, it is the whole technique.
The high-tide roosts are where the spectacle is. Hundreds of thousands of knot, dunlin, bar-tailed godwit and oystercatcher pack onto the last exposed sand, and knot in particular perform the swirling aerial displays that draw photographers. Sites on Texel, Schiermonnikoog and the German and Danish islands all hold roosts.
The exposed flats at low tide are walked on guided mudflat hikes — wadlopen — a genuinely distinctive local activity, crossing to the islands on foot through knee-deep mud with a licensed guide. It is not something to attempt alone; the tide comes in fast and people die doing it.
The sandbanks and channels hold both harbour and grey seals, hauled out in numbers and easily seen from boat trips out of the island harbours.
The Danish section around Tønder is where the black sun happens — sort sol — the spring and autumn gatherings of up to a million starlings that roost in the reedbeds and form vast shifting clouds at dusk.
April to May and August to October are the migration peaks. Winter brings geese in enormous numbers; summer brings breeding terns and spoonbills.
Practicalities
The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning three countries, with national parks in each. Ferries reach the Frisian islands from all three coasts, and the islands are the practical bases.
Check tide tables before deciding anything. For mudflat walking, book a licensed guide — and in the breeding season, keep off marked-off beaches where terns and plovers nest directly on the sand.
