The Telekom Loop and the old Gap road are the classic routes. Mixed feeding flocks move through in waves — laughingthrushes, barbets, minivets, sibias and the fire-tufted barbet that is the hill's emblem — and standing at a bend as a flock crosses can produce twenty species in ten minutes.

The Bishop's Trail and Hemmant Trail are the short forest walks, quieter and better for the skulking species: pittas, wren-babblers and the trogons that sit motionless in the mid-storey.

The Jeriau waterfall road descends slightly and adds lower-montane species to the list.

The gardens and hedges around the settlement itself are surprisingly productive, with sunbirds, spiderhunters and mountain bulbuls feeding in the flowering shrubs beside the golf course.

The night brings owls — brown wood owl and mountain scops owl are both regular — and the occasional civet crossing the road.

Birding is good year-round; the annual bird count in June is a well-established event. Mornings are the productive hours, and the hill is often in cloud by afternoon.

Practicalities

Fraser's Hill is around two hours from Kuala Lumpur, with the final stretch on a narrow winding road that has historically operated one-way by time slot — check the current arrangement before setting off.

Accommodation ranges from old colonial bungalows to simple guesthouses. Local bird guides are available and know the current flock routes and nesting sites; for a short visit they are the difference between a list of ten species and a list of sixty.
