The bais are the signature. Raised viewing platforms overlook clearings where forest elephants — smaller, straighter-tusked and far less known than their savanna relatives — come to drink and dig for minerals, along with forest buffalo, sitatunga and bongo. Sitting on a platform for hours is the method.

The Ngaga area's gorilla groups are habituated western lowland gorillas, tracked on foot through dense marantaceae forest. This is harder walking than mountain gorilla trekking in the east, with visibility often measured in metres, and the encounters are correspondingly wilder.

The Lekoli river, worked by boat and on foot along its banks, gives the easiest general wildlife: putty-nosed and moustached monkeys, palm-nut vultures, and forest elephants coming down to the water.

The forest itself holds eleven primate species, plus chimpanzees, and a bird list including the Congo Basin specialities that draw serious birders.

The drier months from June to August and December to February are the practical windows for tracks and trails.

Practicalities

Access is by charter flight from Brazzaville followed by long drives on forest roads, and the small number of camps operate as a single circuit booked as a package. It is expensive, logistically demanding and physically hard — the marantaceae forest is hot, humid and thick.

Gorilla tracking here follows the same health rules as elsewhere: masks, distance, and no visit if you are unwell. The camps work closely with the Congolese park authority and the research programme that habituated these groups, and the whole operation is a rare example of tourism funding conservation in the Congo Basin.
