The Dampier Strait, between Waigeo and Batanta, is the classic north. Cape Kri holds the record for the most fish species counted on a single dive, Sardine Reef delivers wall-to-wall schooling fish, and Blue Magic is a manta cleaning station where reef mantas queue over the coral heads.

Misool, in the far south, has the most spectacular soft coral and the healthiest reefs, protected by a long-standing no-take zone. Magic Mountain draws both reef and oceanic mantas, and Boo Windows is the archipelago's most photographed swim-through.

Wayag, in the north, is the postcard: a labyrinth of mushroom-shaped karst islets best seen from a viewpoint climb, with a jellyfish lake and reef sharks in the shallows.

The forest on Waigeo holds what most divers miss. Wilson's and red birds of paradise both display at dawn leks reached by a pre-dawn walk to a hide — a genuinely different trip built into the same journey, and worth a night ashore.

The calm-water season runs roughly October to April, when liveaboards operate and visibility is best. Manta aggregations peak with the plankton, and dawn is essential for the birds.

Access and permits

Every visitor needs two official documents before entering the protected areas: a marine park entry permit, currently 700,000 rupiah, and a visitor entry ticket of 300,000 rupiah. Both can be arranged online in advance, and liveaboards and most resorts handle them as part of the booking — confirm yours does. Getting there is a commitment: fly to Sorong via Jakarta or Makassar, then take the ferry or a boat transfer to Waisai and onward to your resort.
