Ningaloo Reef
Ningaloo Reef is Australia's great fringing reef, running along the remote Western Australian coast where whale sharks, manta rays, and humpback whales can be swum with directly from the beach-launched boats. It is strongest for travelers who want in-water encounters with the ocean's largest animals rather than viewing from a deck.
Where to find the wildlife
Ningaloo's advantage over the Great Barrier Reef is proximity: the reef runs within a few hundred metres of shore for most of its length, so you can wade in off the sand and be over coral immediately, and the boats reach the outer reef in minutes rather than hours. What is out there, though, changes month by month.
The outer reef from March to July is whale shark season, when the world's largest fish gathers here after the coral spawning. Licensed operators use spotter planes to locate animals and put small groups in the water ahead of them for a swim alongside. Exmouth's season generally runs longer than Coral Bay's, and sightings sometimes continue well past July.
The same waters from August to October bring humpback whales on migration, and Ningaloo is one of very few places in the world licensed for swimming with them. It is a different encounter from the whale sharks — less predictable, more spectacular when it works.
The manta cleaning stations, particularly off Coral Bay, hold reef mantas year-round with numbers peaking around May to September. These are the reliable fallback when the migratory species are absent.
The lagoon and shore snorkelling at Turquoise Bay and Oyster Stacks in Cape Range National Park needs no boat at all — drift snorkelling over coral with reef fish, turtles and reef sharks straight off the beach.
The land side deserves a day: Cape Range's gorges hold rock wallabies, emus and red kangaroos, and turtles nest on the beaches from November to February.
Practicalities
Exmouth and Coral Bay are the two bases, roughly two hours apart, both reached by flight to Learmonth from Perth or a long drive. Whale shark and humpback swims are strictly licensed with capped operator numbers and set rules on distance and group size — book ahead in season, and note most operators offer a free return trip if no animal is found.
