South Kamchatka Sanctuary
The South Kamchatka Sanctuary protects the southern tip of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, where Kuril Lake hosts the largest sockeye salmon run in Eurasia and one of the densest brown bear concentrations on Earth. It is strongest for photographers who want bears fishing in numbers, in a volcanic landscape almost untouched by roads.
Where to find the wildlife
Everything here revolves around one lake and one fish. Kuril Lake receives millions of spawning sockeye, and the bears that gather to exploit them concentrate along the shallows and river mouths in numbers that make individual bears hard to count — which is why viewing is done from fixed platforms and boats with rangers rather than on foot.
The Kuril Lake shoreline and river mouths are the main viewing areas. Bears fish the shallows and the spawning streams through the run, with mothers and cubs, sub-adults and large dominant males often visible simultaneously from a single platform.
The lake itself, worked by boat, gives the closest and best photography — bears wading and swimming, with the volcanic cones of the sanctuary behind them.
The surrounding tundra and coast hold Steller's sea eagle, the world's heaviest eagle, which gathers here for the salmon alongside the bears, plus sea otters and seals along the Pacific shore.
The volcanic landscape is part of the experience rather than a backdrop: this is a live volcanic peninsula, and the flight in over craters and calderas is a substantial part of what you pay for.
July to September is the season, tracking the salmon run, with August generally the peak for bear numbers.
Practicalities
Access is by helicopter from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky — there is no road — either as a long day trip or staying at the ranger station for several days, which is far better for photography. Permits are required for the sanctuary and are arranged through the operator.
As with other Russian Far East destinations, access for international visitors has been substantially complicated in recent years, and flights, visas and operator availability should all be verified as current before committing. Weather cancels helicopter days regularly, so build slack into any itinerary.
